“Tell me how it happened,” the policeman asks me while he leans over some papers on the desk.

“My brother Cheito got married and after the wedding …”

“What happened after the wedding?”

“Papa, Mama, and I were in the car on the way home.”

“What else?”

“Mama fell out of the car.”

The policeman puts a sheet of carbon paper between the two pages. I tell him that he’s stained his fingers black and he smiles; I look for Papa’s eyes and I realize that he’s not looking at me.

“How did your mother fall out? Try to remember clearly what happened.”

“Like I already told you, sir, my mother was sleeping up against the car door and all of a sudden the door opened.”

“All of a sudden?”

He stares into my eyes. My answer mustn’t have been convincing.

“Yes, all of a sudden. We were bouncing along that San Justo street that’s full of potholes, understand? At the curve the door opened. It wasn’t closed all the way, that’s the reason why.”

“And nobody pushed her?”

“Didn’t I tell you that she fell!”

“And she didn’t open the door either?”

“She was sleeping along the way!”

“I see, I see.”

A door opens, a man looks in and asks to speak with Papa alone.
